AVT Airborne Sensing
ULTRACAM CUSTOMER
It was a beautiful summer day in August this year, blue skies over Graz – UltraCam’s hometown. The tranquility is interrupted by the sound of engines in the sky, coming from a Cessna 402B operated by Vexcel customer AVT Airborne Sensing. Also on board: the UltraCam Osprey 4.1 aerial camera system.
The company AVT Airborne Sensing is based at Münster/Osnabrück airport in Germany and is a subsidiary of Vermessung AVT-ZT GmbH, a surveying company in Imst, Austria. The image flights are performed by AVT Airborne Sensing, while most of the post-processing, as well as the creation of photogrammetric derivate products, take place at the headquarters in Imst. We spoke with Edgar Moskopp, project manager at AVT, about this project and we provide his insights in this blog post.

AVT's buzzwords "just.right" and "high.resolution" both apply exactly to the UltraCam Osprey 4.1 - and that's why this innovative oblique camera system was the best choice for this project and our aerial surveys in general!

On behalf of the Surveying Office Graz, AVT conducted an aerial image flight of the entire city area of Graz with a Cessna 402B on August 4, 2022, in order to generate aerial imagery and further data derivations. In total, thousands of aerial images were taken using the UltraCam Osprey 4.1, a 4th generation UltraCam aerial camera. This camera simultaneously captures photogrammetry-grade nadir and oblique images and collects 1.2 Gigapixels every 0.7 seconds. AVT chose the Osprey 4.1 for the peace of mind that comes with being able to capture a city such as Graz in only 1 flight day, using a system that can be relied upon for precise results.
The collected images will serve as the basis for mapping and updating vegetation and building status (roof landscapes, rising masonry, vegetation characteristics, vegetation groups) throughout the city, as well as for creating a True Orthophoto and a Digital Surface Model.
AVT was very happy with the outcome, as the entire project area could be flown efficiently and in one pass, producing outstanding image and data quality.

Advanced technology
AVT currently has two UltraCam Eagle Mark 2 systems in operation and one UltraCam Osprey 4.1, and an Osprey M3p is available for smaller projects or as a backup for the Osprey 4.1. For the project in Graz, the Osprey 4.1 was just right: “With the Osprey 4.1 we can fly over large areas efficiently and with high resolution. After switching from the Osprey M3p to the 4.1, productivity was increased even further - with the same resolution, the camera covers more area at the same time!" For image processing, AVT always uses the latest version of UltraMap. The Essentials module is permanently in use. For some time now, AVT has switched to also performing Aerotriangulation in UltraMap, and additionally using the Dense Matching and Ortho Pipeline modules.
"Especially for oblique projects, we appreciate the automated "Color Balancing". This allows us to create a very homogeneous appearance. Vertical and oblique images of the same area have the same colors and brightness," says Martina Strudl, who processed the Graz dataset. Not only is innovation and the latest technology a priority at AVT, but also the desire for further development of the company. In December 2020, AVT opened a new subsidiary in Italy for Southern Europe, AVT Airborne Sensing Italia srl. with corporate headquarters in Trento. We look forward to accompanying AVT with our technology also in the future and wish AVT all the best for further projects and developments.
