Who is Kevin Melhuish?
Kevin Melhuish is the owner and founder of MapAfrika, a land surveying company in Johannesburg, South Africa. In his Sales and Support role, Kevin works closely with existing customers, acquires new customers, and manages the survey teams. MapAfrika offers surveying services that include engineering, topographical, cadastral, and sectional title surveying. As the owner of MapAfrika, Kevin’s biggest success so far has been building up MapAfrika into a relevant company in Southern Africa.
Presently, MapAfrika is Vexcel Sales Partner for the African market and sole reseller of PCI Geomatics in Southern Africa. Kevin is consistently motivated by new and interesting projects, for which the most frequently asked questions always are about price, performance, and technical details about the software. When it comes to the “life” in his work-life-balance, he loves to explore the less travelled parts of Southern Africa.

What motivated you to become a Vexcel sales partner?
For me, it was an opportunity to move into the photogrammetry world.
What do you like most about the partnership with Vexcel?
What I like most is that you feel part of a big family. I really value the good cooperation with Vexcel!
How would you describe working with Engelbert Breg, Vexcel Sales Director in the region?
Working with Engelbert is like working with a trustworthy friend! I can always rely on Engelbert and I think we are a very good team.
We would love to hear about the most memorable experience you’ve had with the UltraCam family!
I am not thinking of a specific experience – I’ve enjoyed many memorable times with the UltraCam family. Particularly I am impressed by the camaraderie experienced at all Vexcel user group meetings. That's something very special.
What are the challenges and opportunities in your territory?
Southern Africa has a great photogrammetry industry! But at the same time, we are very limited by the affordability of the cameras. Then there is the Covid-19 pandemic, which unfortunately makes the situation even more challenging.
Looking out 3 to 5 years, what do you think will be the next big change in the geospatial industry?
I expect that automation will be pushed further in the future. This change may already start happening in the near term, given the current pandemic. Additionally, competition and market conditions may drive equipment prices down.
